ENNEAGRAM: Personality As Path
Many of you know that I have studied and used the Enneagram extensively in my graduate work and in my counseling and coaching practice. I am occasionally offering introductory classes, hoping to bring this powerful material into lively discussion and discovery for you.
The Enneagram is a psychospiritual personality typing system, with its roots hundreds to thousands of years old, synthesized from many different spiritual traditions (Sufi, Buddhist, Kabbalah, Muslim). It is widely considered to be deeper and more realistic or flexible than the popular Myers-Briggs system. The great benefit of Enneagram study is the potential expansion of one’s understanding of oneself, of others, our interactions, and our Essence. Applications are everywhere in our lives: family, work, relationships, current events, epochs of civilization.
Ennea means “nine”, and gram means “figure”; the Enneagram is represented by a nine-pointed figure, within a circle. Each of the nine points denotes one of the nine personality types, and the lines and the points’ placement on the circle also have meaning. This system has tremendous fluidity and insight; one is left not with the feeling of being pigeonholed, but rather of being finally seen, understood and appreciated, particularly by oneself.
Classes will be a blend of lecture, demonstrations and role-plays (interactions amongst types, their typical pitfalls and solutions), sharing with the group, fun with movie and music examples, and playing “What’s My Number?” games. Some reading outside of class will be helpful.
